Situated alongside the emerald waters of the Rio Dulce, Hotel Backpackers Restaurant is a brilliant place not only to dine, but to appreciate the beauty and excitement of the area. First of all, there is a small island off to the North where you can enjoy an early morning cup of joe and observe a plethora of graceful white egrets and other bird species glide gently above el rio as they make their way out for a day of flight and food. A couple of the Breakfast (Desayuno) offerings include a traditional Guatemalan dish of lightly fried plantain, black beans, fresh cheese, fruit and eggs. Or you can enjoy a generous fruit platter or the “Americana”, which has the good old staples of eggs of your choice, breakfast-style potatoes, bacon, fruit and bread which is freshly baked on site daily.
With nearly impeccable WiFi availability, many people put their laptops away to savor a hearty lunch of grilled hamburgers, vegetarian lasagna, fish & chips, coconut-mango shrimp or chicken quesadillas. Hotel Backpackers cuisine combines indigenous dishes with an international culinary experience as well. They serve some of the best Chinese food on the river, including a glorious veggie Chow Mein Noodle Soup and dinner options such as spaghetti in a house specialty sauce, pesto or alfredo with moist chicken and fresh mushrooms, Lobster, and freshly caught seafood.
The atmosphere is casual and many evenings boast live music or DJ style beats and a crowded dance floor. Several tables are situated on the waterfront deck where you can sip on a cocktail and watch boaters cruising by or wildlife playing on the river. Good food and good vibes, the Restaurant at Hotel Backpackers is a favorite among the locals and travellers alike.
